Payroll and HR professionals must get ready: big changes are on the horizon for I-9 compliance requirements!

Now more than ever, it's crucial that employers understand the complex immigration laws, undertake good faith efforts to ensure they have a legal workforce, and have reliable I-9 compliance programs in place.

About this program:

In 2008, the Department of Justice increased fines against employers who violate the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA). Fines for knowingly employing an unauthorized alien increased by an average of 25% for each unauthorized worker.

And, while it is unclear if the Obama administration and new Secretary of Homeland Security will continue to focus Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) on worksite enforcement, many employers are already feeling the heat.

In 2008, ICE made 5,100 administrative arrests and more than 1,100 criminal arrests tied to worksite enforcement investigations. Of these criminal arrests, 135 were owners, managers or supervisors — and some were human resources directors charged with harboring illegal aliens!

Don't let your organization take this risk. Join IOMA and immigration compliance experts Joy Mandanas and Garett Steck for an in-depth program on Form I-9 compliance and E-Verify. In just 90 minutes, you'll get an up-to-the-minute review of employment eligibility requirements, and an update on recent enforcement activities at ICE.

In just 90 minutes, you'll learn:

  • Overview of IRCA requirements
  • Revised list of acceptable documents and the February 2, 2009 version of the I-9 form
  • Discrimination rules and issues v. IRCA compliance including document abuse and constructive knowledge
  • E-Verify, federal contractors, and other employers required to use it
  • Avoiding increased criminal penalties and civil fines
  • Latest news and trends on worksite enforcement—will the Obama administration and new Secretary of Homeland Security continue the ICE focus on worksite enforcement?

  • State immigration laws throughout the country
  • And much more!
