New Email offers Registration (with Virus Payload)

by @ 6:52 am. Filed under Email Scams, Trojans, Viruses, Worms

I’ve received several emails today, all matching the same pattern. The email comes iwth a range of subjected and from a range of senders but the enclosed web link, when clicked brings you to the same html, all located on different IP addresses. The few ip addresses I looked up seemed to be typical home computer users which probably means that they are infected machines running spam bots .

Here’s one – Subject is ‘Registration Details

Greetings,We are so happy you joined Ringtone World.User Number: 8191539133Temorary Login: user4089Your Password ID: ce630Be Secure. Change your Login ID and Password.Use this link to change your Login info: http://24.14.127.121/Thank You,Technical ServicesRingtone World

Going to the link brings up this webpage (it also loads a fake video viewer window with no content):

If you do not see the Secure Login Window please install our Secure Login Applet.

Clicking on the link will download the file applet.exe which my Fprot antivirus recognised as a virus but failed to identify the name.

Aussie Sheep Farmer in Mali Marriage Scam

by @ 12:05 am. Filed under Email Scams

Poor Des Gregor!

Presumably no longer satisfied with sheep as romantic partners, Des, 56, flew to Mali in West Africa to meet his future wife, whom he had wooed on the net.

Lovely SheepA sweetener to the marriage was an $80,000 dowry of gold.

Sadly, the marriage ended in him being attacked, tied up and robbed, with a threat to remove his limbs with the working man’s knife of choice, the machete, unless HE paid THEM $85,000!

Des is back in Australia now, nursing his wounded pride and body. Those sheep are starting to look pretty attractive again, I guess.

Fighting the Credit Card Scammers (and the baddest countries!)

by @ 2:04 pm. Filed under Identity Theft, Websites, banking

Fraudlabs are aimed at online retailers and they provide some useful services for checking that the credit card transaction you are about to approve looks ‘right’. Given a combination of IP address, shipping address and credit card identification, they will give you a clear description of why that transaction is not a good risk.

In the case of stolen credit cards, scammers use US-based drop houses as delivery addresses and the credit card they are using will almost certainly be based elsewhere and the IP address they are using for the online order is probably in one of those oh-so-fraud-friendly countries like Nigeria, Romania, Korea, Chine, etc etc etc.

It’s not foolproof – if your sister’s deadbeat husband ‘borrows’ your credit card to buy a new guitar then it’s likely not to raise any red flags – but if your credit card details get ‘lost’ by an online retailer and a chappie in South Korea suddenly wants to buy 20 ipods and have them sent to the other coast – Bingo!

Anyway, if you are interested in what they have to sell, click here and help Scamdex earn some affiliate income.

Here’s a chart that they produce showing the most Evil :( ) countries, this week
